Valentines Day

Hi everyone this is Dave the Cancer Buddy hoping you are all having a great time where ever you are and that you are looking forward to valentines day so that you can spoil your “loved one” to let he or she how much you love them.

Its that time of the year again where we all want to spoil our loved ones, but we all want to find the best bargains, so i have managed to find some for you, but lets first find out a bit more about St Valentines Day 🙂

Valentine’s Day is celebrated on the 14th February in most christian countries around the world. On this day loved ones exchange gifts all in the name of St Valentine. The question is, where did this tradition originate from and who is St Valentine ?

There is a lot of confusion around the legend of St Valentine and the story is shrouded in mystery, but here is one version 😉

Valentine’s Day gives us the opportunity to celebrate love, romance and special relationships, however the origins of this festival of cards, flowers, chocolates, and cupids are actually dark are anything but loving.

It all started with the wild and crazy Romans in ancient Rome when the Romans celebrated the feast of Lupercalia between the 13th and 15th of February.

This was a huge wild party where it is claimed that most men were “drunk and naked” 🙂 and whipped women with hides from animals that were slaughtered for the feast. It was also believed that the women lined up to be whipped believing this would make them fertile.

However there is a much more sinister explanation. It is believed that Emperor Claudius II executed 2 men named Valentine on the 14th February. They were honored as hero’s by the Catholic church as martyrs with the celebration of St. Valentine’s Day.

I have no idea if any of this is true but what is interesting is that about 150 million Valentines Day cards are exchanged every year making it the second most popular day after Christmas.

But what is more interesting is that most economies love Valentines Day.

Various surveys indicate that the US will spend about $18.2 billion this year down from $19.7 bn last year and the UK will spend about GBP 1.6 bn. The major share last year was spent on Jewelry followed by flowers, but cards, perfume, clothes and an evening out used up a big chunk too.
